Fiesta Friday #456

Fall is, arguably, the busiest time of the year for a gardener. That's me, I'm a gardener. I find myself spending most of my spare time, weather permitting, cleaning up the garden. Fallen leaves are everywhere... They seem to particularly enjoy accumulating under the thorniest of bushes, where even the strongest electric blower is challenged in getting them out. Then there are those nail-biting decisions to make... Which plants should go in the greenhouse? Should they be moved now or later? ... continue reading...

Whenever our family feels like celebrating we somehow always end up in a Korean restaurant. A Korean BBQ meal seems so special... think tabletop cooking... with lots and lots of side dishes, also known as banchan in Korean. I can make a meal out of the banchan alone! And that's exactly what I did recently for a family dinner at home. Both of our favorite Korean restaurants have been permanently closed, courtesy of the pandemic. Now if we want to go for a Korean BBQ meal, we have to either ... continue reading...

In a tabbouleh-type salad like this, you won't miss the real grain. Once I even fooled my husband into thinking that he was eating couscous. Granted I loaded his plate with lamb tagine so he didn't have much to complain about. But it goes to show how versatile cauliflower rice or riced cauliflower is. If, however, you're like Giada, and the idea of ... continue reading...

You know the saying You learn something new every day? Apparently, it's true. Or in my case, it's partially true. Only because I'm somewhat unobservant. Or dense. Or both. So, while I can't really claim I learn something new every single day, I do come across something entirely novel every now and then. Something new to me. Something exciting. Like balti. Do you know what that is? I'm pretty sure many of you foodies know what it is, but I didn't! So, according to Wikipedia, "a balti is a type ... continue reading...

Do you know what a pawpaw is? Would it surprise you to know that it's a fruit? And that it's native to the eastern United States? Yes and yes, right?! When I first read about the American pawpaw, I thought it was too good to be true. Whaaat... a hardy fruit tree native to this area where I live and it tastes like a tropical custard mix of banana, mango, and pineapple?! Impossible, I thought. Well, I was wrong. It is so possible and so real that such a fruit exists. The problem is... you can't ... continue reading...
