Fiesta Friday #181

If it’s not one thing, it’s another. This past week was a blur. Skye was ill.

I can talk about it now since she’s out of danger. I just hate to bring bad news, that’s why I didn’t mention it last week. Fiesta Friday should be fun and happy.

Sad fiestas are unnatural and an oxymoron besides.

But I need to tell you, if nothing else it will at least serve as a reminder to all pet owners. It was definitely a wake up call for me to be mindful.

Basically, just be careful when you’re cooking and serving corn, especially corn on the cob. Make sure your dogs don’t steal any.

Corn is hard to digest and can cause upset stomach and the cob poses even worse problems such as intestinal blockage or rupture.

Last week, while my family and I were enjoying grilled corn on the cob, somehow Skye was able to get hold of one. By the time I was able to get to her and pry it out of her mouth, about 2 inches off the top was already missing. She already ate it.

It didn’t agree with her and she became sick. What made it worse was that her X-ray came out inconclusive so the vet couldn’t decide whether to send her to surgery or rule it out. So it was a lot of keeping a close watch on her and a LOT of shampooing the carpet, if you know what I mean (let’s just say it rhymes with “nuke”).

Long story short, she’s better now after a shot to settle her stomach and multiple goings to the bathroom. The vet thinks she’ll be fine. She just needs to keep a bland diet for a while. Thank goodness!!

Oh, Skye! We didn’t realize how much we loved her until we thought we were going to lose her. Needless to say, she’s being thoroughly spoiled by everyone right now. It’s all good!

Now, let’s fiesta! But first, take a look at these:

Summer Squash Gratin from Josette @ thebrookcook

“So beautiful! I’ll have to make this at least once this Summer. How could I not, it’s so beautiful. Yah, I know I’ve already said that but I have to say it twice it’s so beautiful. Ha, that’s three times!” — Angie

Potato Zoodle Breakfast Egg Nests from Monika @ Everyday Healthy Recipes

“I love anything spiralized – the meal looks more appealing. I couldn’t resists such pretty and healthy dish. Monika’s breakfast egg nests are something both adults and kids would love.” — Jhuls

“[These] egg nests need to be on every brunch menu.” — Tracey

Splendid Summer Salad from Jenny @ Dragonfly Home Recipes

“Jenny’s salad is beautiful and nutritious. The lemon lavender ginger dressing looks divine.” — Tracey

Gluten Free Coconut-Filled Mango Crepes from Lathiya @ Lathi’s Kitchen

“I have never seen such beautiful crepes like the one Lathiya did. Adding mango purée into the crepes is a genius idea. The coconut & sugar filling sounds like a perfect filling for delicious mango crepes.” — Jhuls

Oh no Angie, I am so sorry to hear Skye was sick but very happy she is doing better. Over the years I have also learned the hard way that you can’t be too careful when it comes to our fur kids. Hoping you have an awesome weekend and that Skye continues to heal. Pesky corn❤️❤️

So glad the corn story ended well. Skye sounds like a lab. Is she? I volunteer for guide dogs and there has been a lab in the house most of the time for the past 3 years, so I know about their silly habits of wanting to eat anything, and not just food. And thank you so much for featuring my egg nests:)

She’s a Westie, but she’s on the bigger end for her breed. She’s normally not that greedy but she really enjoyed that corn! I had to fight to get it from her.

So glad your dog is ok! Our neighbor’s dog ate a corn cob recently too. They had to give him medicine to induce vomiting, and it all turned out okay, but it was scary for awhile….those four-legged creatures are so precious! Thanks so much for including my salad in the features from last week! I’m so glad to be part of such a lovely group of bloggers. 🙂

I don’t know why these dogs love corn cobs. Don’t they know they’re not good for them? I thought animals had instinct for this kind of things ?? I guess when we domesticated them we also bred the instinct out of them. Thanks, Jenny! And that salad dressing is inspiring with the unique use of lavender in it. I have 5 lavender bushes!

I am so sorry to hear this, Angie! It’s so hard when a pet is sick, especially because you just want them to tell you what they’re feeling! And I had no idea that corn on the cob was that bad for dogs, so thank you for letting us know. One time our rescued hound dog snatched up 2 lbs. of raw chicken thighs from our kitchen counter when I wasn’t looking and I went into a full panic mode. Let’s just say that we needed to get a new rug and he spent a lot of time outdoors that week…

I am glad to hear that she is feeling better and I’m sure she’s loving all the extra lovin’ and snuggles she is getting has been getting after such a rough go!

Exactly! She started crying and whining almost as soon as I wrestled the corn off her and I thought she was just angry. In hindsight she was probably already feeling sick. Only the morning after did we find ut since she left the telltale stain on the rug. What a busy and worrying week! So glad the ordeal is over, phew. Thanks, Jasmine! ?

Thanks, Laura! And yes, definitely keep an eye on them when cooking corn; they actually seem to like the taste! I guess we all need to remind ourselves that they’re not humans and can’t handle certain foods the way we do. But sometimes it’s hard not to give in, right, when they look at you with their cute faces begging for food ?

My heart went to my throat when I heard about Skye. Thanks goodness she’s ok! A corn cob nearly did Gibson in two years ago, and the surgery was so difficult for him, especially, I think coz he was an older dog. I’m glad she was able to work it through.

Since then, anything with bones (like my chicken wings) or corncobs goes straight out into the garage into the bin there. There’s so many dangers for dogs and things that you don’t think about until they happen.

It’s so hard to be a dog mom sometimes – to have all that responsibility for a creature that adores you and knowing they can’t speak and tell you what’s wrong…and then constantly wondering if you’re doing the right thing. It sounds like you did exactly the right thing, here. Give Skye kisses for us from me and Chance. Homer (the cat) declines…:)

It IS hard to be a dog mom. They can’t exactly tell you what they need, definitely can’t entertain themselves. It’s not like they can watch TV or skype their friends or go to the mall ?
My Skye wants attention from me and her dad 24/7, not so much from the kids, go figure. I’m constantly tripping over her; she’s always on my heels! She threw up again yesterday, but very tiny amount, probably my fault, I shared my waffles with her. No more human food! But she has the most irresistible face! Tell Homer Skye sends him wet kisses, lol.

🙂 I buy a few minutes time here and there with the kong treat ball, another larger ball that I fill with dog food that sprinkles out treats when it’s rolled and a number of different things I can put peanut butter in. If Chance doesn’t outright destroy them, they keep him busy!!
