Fiesta Friday #172

In celebration of the first ripe fig from the garden, I made this fruit platter.

fruit-platter | fiestafriday.net

If you only knew how hard or how many times I’ve tried growing figs, you wouldn’t be so quick to think this is silliness.

This is fig tree number five. The first four? All croaked.

This one looks pretty pathetic as well. Has actually lost almost all of its leaves. But lo and behold, one ripe fig hung on.

ripening-fig

Therefore, a celebration! With a fruit fiesta!

That, by the way, turned out to be the best way to get your non-fruit-loving husband and son to show interest in eating fruits.

All in all, not a bad idea.

I’m in South Jersey area, near Philadelphia. But I think it was just a fluke. The fig tree did live inside my living room all throughout winter, lol.

Cool. I just bought a fig tree. It won’t produce this year, all the leaves dropped off (transit shock, I presume), but three leaflets have started as new growth. Mine will overwinter indoors, as well.

I usually grow some basil in a small pot in the spring and summer. I’ve done cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, and zucchini but they take up too much space on my tiny balcony. I have to prioritize making space to hang laundry since we don’t have a dryer haha.

I feel your joy Angie!! I will celebrate the birth of fig with you! When my plants get sick, I feel sad.. when they die, I feel horrible! When my jasmine plant flowered and filled the house with it’s pleasant fragrance, I was overjoyed. So, yes, I feel you. You have good reason to celebrate!! Love all the features! Looking forward to co-hosting with my dear friend Jhuls and you and tasting all the goodies our friends bring in!

I guess it’s easy to take things for granted when they are so readily available. I am a very bad gardener, have little understanding of it but I am trying to get better and so far most of my herbs are doing ok this year:)

I have 2 fig trees in pots on the deck. In past years some animal gets to them just as they ripen. It is is disappointing as I love fresh figs. I’m hopeful they will fare better when moved to our second home, perhaps I can actually plant them in the ground. Anyway, gorgeous fruit platter! Happy Friday. It is almost summer, when do you start vacation?

I hear you! I have to fight off deer, groundhogs, rabbits, birds over here. Always something! But you’re lucky you can grow figs in the ground. It’s iffy to do that where I am, though I’ve heard of successes. Hope your figs will be happy in their second home?

I sympathize, in Fort Bragg there are deer, rabbits, and gophers. I won’t be planting too much until we can install a deer fence (and everything has to go into a gopher cage). The one thing I don’t have to worry about is the weather, it doesn’t often get below freezing.

Summer has definitely sprung in your back yard! We have a few green alpine strawberries and a lot of unripe damsons which we hope will be spared from the birds … We have a half term break next week which makes me feel all summery, but as we’re heading north we won’t be packing any bikinis. Nor sun cream.

Thanks, Petra! If your weather permits you to grow it outdoors, I’d definitely recommend it. It’s such a sculptural tree, decorative even when not in fruit. It’s been a good week, but tiring coz I finally tilled the tomato bed ? It’s now ready for planting, yay!!
