Has anyone else noticed an increase in their comment spams recently? A huge increase, upwards of 100 per day? What is going on?!
They’re so noticeably spammy, too, in their long and rambling paragraphs. There’s no mistaking them for legitimate comments. The strange thing is that many of them are in Russian. Like this:
Isn’t that weird?
I don’t read Russian, so they’re pretty much gibberish to me.
So, who generates these comment spams? Russian bots?
And what is it that they’re trying to accomplish? Don’t they know that Akismet will catch most of them? Actually, so far, Akismet has caught every single one of them, and all I need to do is delete them or empty my spam folder. A piece of cake, right?
But, is there something else to them that I need to know about? Like, should I be concerned? I do hate these aspects of blogging, where you have to be watchful for suspicious activities, hacking attempts, etc. Grrr…
Anybody else having a similar issue? Sigh…
I’d rather be looking at these:
“Oh, my… do these potatoes sound good or what?! My mouth is watering just looking at them. Wish I could get an invite to Petra’s party… sigh…” — Angie
“Did y’all know last Saturday was National S’mores Day? Yeah, me, neither! So, is it too late to make this tart, which I think sounds downright delectable?! Definitely not! Any day is a good day for S’mores, am I right?!” — Angie
“What a gorgeous dish! I adore the spice and creaminess! Amazing!” — Antonia
“India celebrated her 73rd Independence Day yesterday, and in honor of the day Vanitha made these cookies in the colors of the Indian flag. I thought they look pretty cool. The recipe sounds very easy and straight-forward, too. I may adapt it for Thanksgiving or Christmas.” — Angie

I’ve had the same with spam comments! Absolutely loads of the damn things. It seems to have settled down in the past few days though
Angie says
Well, since last night until this morning Akismet caught 46 spams. I guess that’s better than 100 ? So annoying, right?
Deb says
I am excited to be back and joining the party! I’ve taken a break and excited to announce the birth of our first son! I’m currently home with him enjoying month one and slowly getting back into the kitchen and writing. No spam noticed on my site, but I think my traffic is a bit slower than yours 😉
Also, I might be able to co-host later in September if those are still open!
Angie says
Oh, wow, congratulations Deb! I’m so thrilled for you. Enjoy this precious time; they grow so alarmingly fast, lol. Yes, most weeks in Sept are still open, so you can take your pick, just let me know. Congratulations again, so exciting!!

I’m so excited for you! Congrats!!

Thank you for hosting this party.
Angie says
You’re welcome ?

hi Angie
Thank you for the feature! There is always space at my table for you! Of all the things I think the potatoes went first! Isn’t that funny!
I get lots of spams, usually they come in one language at the time, last week was French, lots of French spam, sometimes Russian in an abundance and of course the English ones! Even the English ones rarely makes any sense!
What a party! I almost reached for a spoon to taste Mollies creamy, stuffed shells!
Have a brilliant weekend 🙂 xx
Angie says
You’re welcome! That potato dish looks very appealing, that’s why, with the roasted tomatoes peeking underneath the scallions, just beautiful. You’re right about those spams, none of them make any sense at all. I hate spams! ?
Dee | Grammy's Grid says
Thanks so much for hosting!
Angie says
You’re welcome, Dee!

Ah spam! Yes, so glad it all gets stopped – I’ve not had Russian ones for a while but obviously someone thinks you’re in the market for renting a private jet! If only! 😛 (we have Russian speaking guests staying)! Anyway, I’m bringing my quick and easy oaty digestive biscuits this week – great for breakfast too! 😛 I’m thinking I might have to veganise Erin’s featured S’mores tart – not something we really have over here but I know my son would eat it all in one sitting! 😛 I’ll sort a co-hosting date and let you know (We’re still on school summer hols for another few weeks yet). Thanks for hosting! Have a fab weekend.
Angie says
We have about 2 more weeks or so before summer break ends. Can’t believe how quickly it’s going. I just hate the thought of going back to work! Unfortunately I really do need structure in my life, a daily routine that keeps my procrastinating in check. Did you say you make your own digestive biscuits? And you call it quick and easy? I’ll be the judge of that ? Yes, let me know when you can cohost. I really, really NEED cohosts!
frugal hausfrau says
Laurena, How funny that you just happened to have two handy translators!! I’m glad it didn’t happen to say something horrible, lol!!
Life Diet Health says
lol… I know.. I was a bit apprehensive asking them! :p Love your creamy cajun stuffed shells Mollie x

Catherine Sokolowski says
I don’t have lots of traffic so I don’t get a lot of traffic or comments but what is a little creepy right now is that some of the traffic sources are coming from very seedy sites. When it first happened a couple of months ago, I opened one up! Yikes!! I won’t do that again!!! Thanks for hosting this party every week!
Angie says
Did it lead you to something that starts with “p” and ends with “orn” and it’s not popcorn? ? Seriously, I don’t get what these spams are trying to do. Maybe occasionally they get an accidental click, and maybe that’s enough for them, who knows. I just want them to leave me alone! ?
Tamy says
I am also getting those SPAM comments! Mine are appearing in Russian and Chinese! It is so frustrating! Anyway, once again another GREAT party FULL of inspiring projects and recipes – thanks for hosting! I can’t wait to see what everyone shares this week.
Angie says
I know, it’s VERY frustrating! Luckily Akismet seems effective in filtering them out. Though yesterday I found one that managed to sneak into pending comments. Thank goodness I saw it!
frugal hausfrau says
I’m feeling left out…I only had 18 spam this month and most were in French. It seems the Russians don’t like me!!
Thanks for featuring my Cajun Shells!! And Happy FF!
Mollie.
Angie says
Consider yourself lucky. You’ve been spared from the hassle of having to check and delete, which I have to do every now and then.
Your Cajun Shells sounds so good! I have shells, I just need to find Cajun ? Btw, don’t forget you’ll be cohosting next week, Fiesta Friday #290, Aug 23. With me as your wing woman ?
frugal hausfrau says
Thanks for the reminder!! We’ll have fun!!
Angie says
Yaass!!
Jhuls | The Not So Creative Cook says
Now, you reminded me that I haven’t checked my spam folder. I used to have them, mostly non-kid friendly spam. I haven’t received anything like the one you had, though. I hope these things end – they make us suspicious all the time. I always have this feeling that my blog might be hacked or something.
Anyway, thank you for hosting, Angie. Apologies, my comment is late. To make it up to you, I can co-host on Aug. 30. 😀
Angie says
I think you should check your spam folder periodically, Jhuls. These spams don’t seem to affect the blog negatively so far, but who knows. I’d rather not have them lurking around, so I’m quick to delete them. Aug 30 is yours, Jhuls. Thanks so much ?? Your cohost is Diann @ Of Goats and Greens
Jhuls | The Not So Creative Cook says
Will do that, Angie. Thank you for the reminder. We should get rid of them.
I am so excited to co-host with Diann. Now, let me think about what I should bring. 😀 Have a lovely week!
Helen at the Lazy Gastronome says
I have noticed the spam – and it’s not getting caught by the spam filter either! But the party is awesome! Thanks for hosting!
Angie says
Oh, that’s terrible Helen. I use Akismet and it’s been pretty effective. Thanks for coming to the party!
Vanitha Bhat says
Thanks so much for the feature dear and thank you so, so much for hosting this event so religiously every week! I do want to cohost sometime (did it once a while back), but kinda overwhelmed now with lot of backlog, moving between 3 homes (mine and my two sons’) etc.! Will message when ready! Sorry I missed this week’s party!
Angie says
You’re welcome! Moving 3 homes?! That sounds like an impossible feat, Vanitha ? Sounds like you’re all moving together at the same time. Good luck!
