A few weeks ago, my husband and I decided to spend a night in the city (and by that, I mean Philadelphia), primarily to explore new and previously unvisited restaurants.
One of the places we chose was Black Dragon Takeout – “a unique fusion of Black American cuisine presented with the familiar aesthetics of classic Chinese American takeout”. Although the online reviews were not particularly positive, we decided to give it a try anyway.
Personally, I think the reviews are a bit harsh. I would rate the restaurant a solid 4 out of 5. It’s not quite a 4.5 and certainly not a 5, but it’s also better than the 3.6 reflected in the online ratings.
The dishes were a mixed bag. I enjoyed their General Roscoes Chicken and the Oxtail Lo Mein, but I would skip the Collard Green Fried Rice in the future. The egg rolls were decent. The Soul Egg Rolls were excellent, but the Collard Greens Egg Rolls could have used more flavor.
We ordered a few more items but while they were okay, none of them were particularly memorable.
Still, I thought the concept of the restaurant was a good one. They just need to execute better, that’s all.
Once we got home, I decided to make Collard Green Egg Rolls myself, adding more ingredients (carrots, ham) to make them more flavorful.
Here are my thoughts about these egg rolls: they are good, but not the best. There’s a reason why cabbage is typically used instead of collard greens, lol. It’s a great way to eat a lot of greens, however. Besides, once you dip these egg rolls in the sweet chili sauce, you won’t mind that they’re filled with collard greens.
How else, otherwise, would I be able to persuade the husband to eat his greens?! 🤣
